Overlooking the broad beach of Sables d’Or, the Manoir, which was converted into a 20 room hotel thirty years ago, has now entered the top 25 French hotels as judged by Tripadvisor, “the Traveller’s choice.”
Well known to travellers, especially foreigners, this list recognizes the best hotels worldwide, based solely on customer recommendations.
The number of stars and level of luxury are of minor importance; it’s the quality of the welcome and value for money that count. The owners of the Manoir St Michel, Sandra and Jerome Fournel, came thirteenth in the list, the number one spot going to an hotel in nearby St Malo. “It’s an incentive to keep going,” they say. “We’re only thirteenth; there’s room for improvement”
Only 3 years ago they were still unaware of Tripadvisor. It was an English customer who drew their attention to it. “He came to us because we had a good listing”, says Jerome Fournel. “Since then it has become our barometer, our principal means of judging ourselves.”
In recent postings guests expressed reservations about carpeted rooms and the butter served at breakfast. “It is true that even very clean carpets are not recommended for allergy sufferers. We had already begun to lay laminated wood flooring in the rooms. We accelerated the process this winter, converting four bedrooms instead of the two originally planned “. With regard to the butter, Jerome and Sandra have changed to a local product.
“This award is also a very good marketing aid for us, as we don’t have the means of large hotel chains; we rely on the Michelin and Routard Guides and our website.” In a continual endeavour to improve standards, the 2 star hotel is working with the Chamber of Commerce to qualify for the Tourism Quality label.
The staff at the Manoir St Michel love pampering their clients, something they are very good at.
